Profile
After graduating from UCD in 1992 with an honours degree in Landscape Horticulture, I taught horticulture in England and maintained gardens in north Wales, where I completed a Higher National Diploma in Design Crafts in 2003. Since then, I’ve run workshops in schools, hospitals and galleries, as well as creating finely-worked sculptural baskets, using natural fibres and recycled materials with basketry techniques; combining horticulture and art. My work is inspired by naturally occurring circles and spirals, Irish folklore, architecture, vessels and movement, with pieces named in Irish, Welsh, English or scientifically, sometimes with a story behind their making. The natural environment is often the theme of these stories, but they also include ideas of protection, growth and tradition. I am very conscious of environmental issues and set out to make work which does not have a negative impact on the natural world.
My aim, through the combination of materials, techniques and stories, is to create precious objects from ordinary things; objects which inspire people to take notice of their local environment and to set more value on the commonplace.
My work has been selected for many exhibitions in the UK and Ireland, including Chelsea Craft Fair (2005) and the RDS National Craft Competition (2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2004). I moved back to Ireland in 2006 and am now living in West Cork.
