Profile

My currant work was inspired from a recent visit to Spain. Travelling through the Spanish countryside I was a spectator at many festivals and celebrations typically representing Spanish Culture and tradition.
Culture and tradition were very much to the forefront of my mind because of Cork’s engagement as European Capital of Culture in 2005.My experience in Spain evoked childhood memories of the Shawlies on the Coal Quay. The Cloaks the women wore in the county towns and my daydreams of ladies of the gentry’s houses attending City Hall for the grand balls.

The limestone and Marble carving’s depict mother and child wrapped in a shawl, snuggled closley together to ward off the elements of the harsh outside world. My bronze castings manifest my childhood thoughts in that I could never put faces to figures, I could only imagine the flowing gowns swishing past almost conjoined to one another as they swireled and bellowed in the wind. Simplified treatments of these indelible impressions are expressed in the forms of my relief work. (canvas, cloth, gesso and plaster)
My challenge as a sculptor is to communicate, express and extract from nature what already exists all around us.
